Peter Rushword tells the story of his journey to (and taking part in) the Transplant Games #GoTeamKent
A few years ago I was invited to attend a Well Man Clinic held at my GP’s surgery, and I am glad I went along. From the various tests carried out, it was revealed I had a problem with my kidneys, and referred to a renal specialist for further investigation.
I was completely unaware there was a problem, and the finding of stage 4 kidney failure came as a shock. Consultations were arranged, further tests carried out and options were discussed. Several family members put up their hands to help and on Midsummer Day 2023, I received a new kidney from my eldest son.
Fast forward to August 2025, I now find myself going to the World Transplant Games in Dresden and representing Team GB in the sport of golf A game that is fun, frustrating at times, but an enjoyable past time. I usually play once a week in the veterans section of my local club and have a handicap that tends to bounce around from 18 to 23, yet I find myself selected!
This came about from information supplied at my first post-transplant meeting with the local Renal Unit. Here I was given lots of information regarding ongoing support, both clinical and wellness which included details for involvement in Transplant sport. I made enquires and entered the British Transplant Games for Team Kent to play golf at Wollaton Park GC, securing a second place finish in Division Two.
A new world opened up and I was like a kid in a sweet shop, not only could I play golf there were other sports I could enter. The only entry requirement, a transplant! No skills or prior knowledge required just go and have fun and try something new. The hardest bit, making the initial enquiry and actually sending off the registration form, and nervously waiting to see what the games were all about. True answer, amazing. It really was welcoming and fun to take part, have a laugh and try out new experiences. This includes being invited to play golf and represent Team GB at the World Transplant Games, Dresden August 2025.
With help and guidance from Gareth Bailey PGA golf coach based at Sittingbourne Golf Centre, I have been following a plan to improve the way I play golf. Developing new skills. and learning how and why I hit golf balls sideways into the trees. That still happens, but with more finesse! Golf is more fun, including weeding tasks carried out in the garden while practising.
